Ils ont fait le théâtre, ces empressés, les machines, les ballets, les vers, la musique, tout le spectacle, jusqu'à la salle où s'est donné le spectacle, j'entends le toit et les quatre murs dès leurs fondements. Qui doute que la chasse sur l'eau, l'enchantement de la Table, la merveille du Labyrinthe ne soient encore de leur invention? J'en juge par le mouvement qu'ils se donnent, et par l'air content dont ils s'applaudissent sur tout le succès. Se je me trompe, et qu'ils n'aient contribué en rien à cette fête si superbe, si galante, si longtemps soutenue, et où un seul a suffi pour le projet et pour la dépense, j'admire deux choses: la tranquillité et le flegme de celui qui a tout remué, comme l'embarras et l'action de ceux qui n'ont rien fait.

Who doubts that the hunt on the water, the enchantment of the Table, the marvel of the Labyrinth is also of their invention? Le H** G** est immédiatement au-dessous de rien. Il y a bien d'autres ouvrages qui lui ressemblent. Il y a autant d'invention à s'enrichir par un sot livre qu'il y a de sottise à l'acheter: c'est ignorer le goût du peuple que de ne pas hasarder quelquefois de grandes fadaises.

The H** G** is immediately below nothing. There are many works like it. It takes as much fabrication to become rich by a foolish book as it takes stupidity to buy it: a person ignores the taste of the people if he doesn't risk writing extreme nonsense. 

Der H** G** reicht bis unmittelbar an das Nichts heran. Viele andere Werke gleichen ihm darin. Es gehört ebensoviel Erfindungsgabe dazu, sich durch ein dummes Buch zu bereichern, als Dummheit, es zu kaufen: es hiesse, den Geschmack des Volkes zu verkennen, wollte man bisweilen nicht grosse Plattheiten wagen.
