Quelle horrible peine
a un homme qui est sans prôneurs et sans cabale, qui n'est engagé dans aucun
corps, mais qui est seul, et qui n'a que beaucoup de mérite pour toute
recommandation, de se faire jour à travers l'obscurité où il se trouve, et de
venir au niveau d'un fat qui est en crédit!

How horribly difficult for a man who has no eulogist and is part of no
cabal, who does not belong to any clique, but who is alone, and who only has a
great deal of merit to recommend him, to break through the obscurity that he
finds himself in and to reach the level of a conceited fool who has influence!
Tout persuadé que je
suis que ceux que l'on choisit pour de différents emplois, chacun selon son
génie et sa profession, font bien, je me hasarde de dire qu'il se peut faire
qu'il y ait au monde plusieurs personnes, connues ou inconnues, que l'on
n'emploie pas, qui feraient très bien; et je suis induit à ce sentiment par le
merveilleux succès de certaines gens que le hasard seul a placés, et de qui
jusques alors on n'avait pas attendu de fort grandes choses.
Combien d'hommes admirables, et qui avaient de
très beaux génies, sont morts sans qu'on en ait parlé! Combien vivent encore
dont on ne parle point, et dont on ne parlera jamais!
As persuaded as I am
that the people who are chosen for different jobs, each according to his genius
and profession, do well, I dare say that there are many people in the world,
known or unknown, who are not employed and who would also do very well; and I
am lead to this feeling by the marvelous success of certain people whom chance
alone gave positions, and from whom no one had expected very great things until
then.
How many admirable
men, who had very beautiful spirits, are dead and are not spoken of! How many
are still living whom people never speak about and never will!
