If the father-confessor and the spiritual director don't agree at all on a rule of conduct, who will be the third person whom a woman will take as arbitrator?

What is a woman who is spiritually directed? Is it a woman who is more obliging to her husband, kinder to her servants, more devoted to her family and its affairs, more ardent and sincere with her friends; who is less of a slave to her mood, less attached to her own interests, who has less love of the commodities of life; I don't say who gives much money to her children who are already rich, but who, being opulent herself and overwhelmed with superfluities, furnishes them with everything necessary, and gives them what they justly deserve; who is more exempt of self-love and of estrangement from others; who is more free of all human attachments? "No," you say, "it doesn't mean any of those things." I insist, and ask again: "Then what is a woman who is spiritually directed?" At last I understand you, it is a woman who has a spiritual director.

Note concerning 'spiritual directors' below: At the time La Bruyère wrote, nearly every fashionable lady had, besides her father-confessor, a spiritual director, who was her 'guide, philosopher and friend.' Boileau, in his tenth satire, says:

But thanks to pious souls, of all mortels
no one is better pampered than a spiritual director of women.

Einige Frauen geben sich in den Klöstern und ihren Liebhabern als galante und freigebige Wohltäterinnen, sie lesen noch unter der Kanzel und im Oratorium zärtliche Billette, wenn niemand sieht, dass sie nicht zu Gott beten.

 

Quelques femmes donnent aux couvents et à leurs amants: galantes et bienfactrices, elles ont jusque dans l'enceinte de l'autel des tribunes et des oratoires où elles lisent des billets tendres, et où personne ne voit qu'elles ne prient point Dieu.

Some women are generous to the church as well as to their lovers: female gallants and benefactresses, in the very precinct of the altar they have their own galleries and oratories where they read their love notes, and where no one sees that they are not praying to God at all.

Ich habe mehrmals  erörtert, daß, während die Thiere nur Gattungscharakter haben, dem Menschen allein der eigentliche Individualcharakter zukommt. Jedoch ist in den Meisten nur wenig wirklich Individuelles: sie lassen sich fast gänzlich nach Klassen sortiren. Ce sont des espèces. Le philosophe, qui fait tout pour la vanité, a-t-il droit de mépriser le courtisan, qui fait tout pour l'intérêt? Il me semble que l'un emporte les louis d'or et que l'autre se retire content, après en avoir entendu le bruit. D'alembert, courtisan de Voltaire par un intérêt de vanité, est-il bien au-dessus de tel ou tel courtisan de Louis XIV, qui voulait une pension ou un gouvernement?    

Does a philosopher who does everything because of vanity have the right to scorn a courtier who does everything because of self-interest? It seems that the one carries away louis d'ors [valuable gold pieces] and the other rests content after having heard the clatter. Is d'Alembert, who courted Voltaire out of vanity, very much above this or that courtier of Louis XIV, who wanted a pension or a government post?
