Kein Zufall ist so unglücklich, als dass kluge Leute nicht Vorteil daraus zögen, und keiner so glücklich, als dass unüberlegte ihn nicht zu ihrem Nachteil wenden könnten.

There is no accident so unfortunate that clever people don't turn it to some advantage, nor any accident so fortunate that imprudent people can't turn it against them.

Obwohl die Menschen sich auf ihre großen Taten etwas zugute tun, sind diese doch meist nicht Resultat eines großen Vorsatzes, sondern des Zufalls.

 

Quoique les hommes se flattent de leurs grandes actions, elles ne sont pas souvent les effets d'un grand dessein, mais des effets du hasard.
