A person has to wipe away this inconvenience when he reads works made by people who belong to a party or cabal, that he does not always find the truth in them. Facts are disguised, the opposing sides reasons are not reported in all their force, nor with precision; and, what requires the most patience, he has to read a great number of bitter and injurious words said by serious men, who make a personal quarrel out of the contested points of a doctrine. These works are peculiar in that they merit neither the prodigious success that they have for a certain time, nor the profound oblivion that they fall into when, the fire of the party division becoming extinguished, they become almanachs of a previous year.
