A
wise man cures his ambition with ambition itself; he reaches for such great
things that he cannot limit himself to what people call treasures, positions,
fortune and favor; he sees nothing in such weak advantages that is good or
solid enough to fulfill his heart, and to merit his cares and desires; he even
needs effort not to disdain them too much. The only good capable of tempting
him is that sort of glory that only comes from a completely pure and simple
virtue; but men seldom grant it to others, and he does without it.
